In January of 2018, As I planned my theme, I started to fall in love with the moon and stars and their meaning. It was a month that is synonymous with new beginnings when we dream and make wishes to achieve all of our hopes and aspirations. Do you ever look up at the stars that fill the night sky and feel a sense of wonder? The Brave Bunny and Nani Bear did the same thing and realized that they could create a sky just as beautiful for themselves. And so, with a cart full of stars, they worked together to build their unique sky, one star at a time.
I made these prints in 2021 hoping to launch then, but after a few more months of overcoming challenges, I launched my shop in 2022, making this print even more memorable. The date 2021, signifies the effort and determination it took to get here and the beginning of the dream.

Life can be chaotic, and changes are difficult but inevitable. The Nani Bear knew that he needed a moment to feel balanced to be capable of dealing with chaos with patience. So he closed his eyes and imagined himself on the moon, among the twinkling stars, as life continued to be chaotic around him. He quieted his mind and let his thoughts drift like the shooting stars passing by. And he found his peace as he listened to the silence of empty space, smiling, knowing that he could come back whenever he wanted.

Story. In 2015, I was using pen and ink but also trying out watercolors. Pen and ink was something I was used to, but compared to the work of successful artists' I felt that it was the reason I wasn't successful. I thought if I added some color, maybe I'd be on my way to being 'successful' too. In hindsight, I was so stuck on copying the paths of others that I had forgotten about my own preferences and purpose.
This piece depicted how I felt about work, especially the dread I felt about Mondays. It was one of my first attempts at conveying emotion and still makes me smile today.
I hope this piece helps you to feel a little less alone. It's okay to be sad sometimes.

Story. After my first unofficial business failed in 2015 and amid wedding planning, I started to learn how to illustrate with watercolors. It was a significant change from black and white ink drawings to color. I was convinced that watercolor would be 'the' medium that'll contribute to a bright future. So one day, I sketched and painted a figurine of a hedgehog on my desk and turned it into a bunny smelling flowers and food it'll find in the garden. It was a test, and it surprised me how much I truly enjoyed the process.
Although I was lost then, I felt so much joy experimenting. Allowing myself the freedom to try new things helped me learn what I liked and didn't like and break out of my comfort zone.

Story. One day, my partner gifted me a fresh-picked flower from our garden. When I saw it, I knew I wanted to experiment with three things: Illustrating directly from my mind, with no reference; having the illustration interact with the flower, so breaking the barrier between actual and imagination; and using only watercolors, which I was still learning how to control.
And I recorded the whole thing, edited the video, and posted it. Then I deleted the video because it lacked views. So I threw the flower away and put my illustration in storage like it never happened until now.
This began the unpleasant journey of defining my worth through views on YouTube. But it is also the beginning of my current journey, where I'm rebuilding my self-esteem and learning my worth.

This and the ‘Hot Air Balloon’ came from that list. I imagined them with typography like "you are so sweet" or "you are my greatest adventure." I imagined having a complete portfolio of illustrations like these.
But I never posted them. After two pieces, I was exhausted. Creating fast art was not something I wanted to do. One of the biggest lessons I learned was that pivoting was okay and essential to growing.
Although it was difficult, I learned to listen to my intuition.

Story. In 2016, My watercolor skills grew, and I was convinced that my purpose for making art was to license my work to big companies for them to use it on their products. Story. In 2017, I made a YouTube video teaching watercolor techniques by creating this illustration. I was far from a professional, but I thought I could help others feel less intimidated. But I had a big problem. I wasn't comfortable showing my face or sharing my voice in my videos anymore. I also thought that making the anonymous video boosted my views, and I was obsessed with views. At this point, the more views I gained, the better I was doing. I used it as a measurement of success.
But I didn't know then that inspiration and creativity don't come from popularity and metrics like that; it comes from the things that make you light up.
I hope this piece reminds you to be genuine. Money and success are results, not a cause.

Story. In June of 2017, I was at one of my lowest points. My job drained me of the rest of my self-esteem. And a year after my dad passed, I was still grieving the loss. But I was determined to build my YouTube channel by posting thrift flipped wedding dresses. I wanted to leave my job, hoping I'd fall back on YouTube, but it wasn't working.
You see, I thought I was destined to be a fashion designer. I made my wedding dress, loved drawing these perfect outfits, and thoroughly enjoyed turning them into a reality. But I didn't love sewing. And when you don't love the process, it becomes difficult to maintain.
This illustration is my final fashion sketch. At this point, I've lost the spark that maybe wasn't really there. And it was the moment I had to figure out, "where do I go next?"

Story. After I left my job without a backup plan, I was mentally struggling. Having a job was the only way I knew how to earn a living. YouTube was not really a thing yet, and I had no idea how to grow my channel, and I didn't know much about business. But I knew I needed to deal with my fears. And the only way I knew how to tackle them was through journaling.
But just writing wasn't giving me joy, so I illustrated and wrote. Experimenting and sharing as I went.
This piece, as simple and imperfect as it is, was a necessary step to leading me here today. As I made this piece, I willed myself to let go of perfection and enjoy the process. Try techniques I haven't tried before and just create.
I hope this piece reminds you to do the same. You don't need to prove anything to the world, especially that you are enough. Because you already are; imperfectly perfect and enough.

Story. In September 2017, I started Bullet Journaling but wasn't very good at hand-lettering. Other journalists would create beautiful typography pieces, and I didn't know where to start. And I also realized that my florals were a bit basic, and I defaulted to the same floral motifs. I wanted to improve. So, inspired by Rifle Paper Co, I designed these postcards.
I'm laughing as I watch my tutorial for these cards because I can't believe I dared to share what I knew, even though I knew it wasn't the best. And in a way, it makes me proud to see that I did it anyway.
With practically no income, I was determined to learn the skills I lacked, hoping they would help me feel more confident. And it did.
So I hope these pieces remind you that you are capable of doing and learning things you never thought you could.

Story. In October 2017, when I started to post more regularly on YouTube and Instagram, I also started to become more fearful of not being good enough. The constant scrolling as I researched topics and ideas made me feel like I was very far behind. And I knew I needed to pick myself up.
So I created this painting as part of a video to remind myself (and you) to keep going despite fear. It was also a recreation of one of my pen and ink drawings.
I wanted it to feel magical and illustrate the idea that there is more to be discovered beyond where you are.

Story. In November 2017, I was neck-deep, battling my fears. No one tells you that when you create art and share it, it will feel vulnerable and lacking if you aren't mindful.
This illustration is a metaphor for how fear stops us from achieving our goals and trying. This fox is headstrong even though the rain beats against her. And despite the hardship, she is relentless and proud.
It was the first time I attempted to use watercolor in a very saturated and lighthearted style. But to this day, I love the outcome. I hope this illustration helps to remind you that you're capable despite fear.

Story. In 2018, with the help of a dear friend, I began reaching out to potential sponsors to turn YouTube into an income stream. It was like walking into a foreign restaurant, not knowing what anything meant or how to communicate. But it was also exciting because I could make an income creating videos I loved.
These illustrations were the outcome of my very first animal tutorial on YouTube. I'm still proud of these little guys today, as they were the beginning of what I am creating now.
I hope these illustrations remind you that you can start now as you are; you don't need to wait until you're better. Because you are better than you once were, and you'll get better as you practice.
